The laboratory comprises 20% of the final course grade. A passing grade in the laboratory is required to pass the course. Attendance at every laboratory is required. Excused absenses will be permitted only with advance notice and approval by the lab TA . Absences may also be approved in the event of an unforseen emergency, subject to approval. Arrangements must be made with the TA to make up any missed laboratory. An unexcused absence will result in a score of 0 for that lab. Two unexcused absences will result in failure of the course. The recitations meet every Tuesday and Thursday in room 306. Quizzes may be given during the recitations, so attendance is expected. There are no makeups for quizzes. Quiz scores are included as part of the lab grade.
Please read the schedule carefully since the laboratory does not meet every day. The laboratory will be in room 510 or 508 as indicated, depending on the experiment.

The laboratory manual for Physics 222 is an on-line text, Selective Experiments for Physics 222 at The University of Tennessee. Be sure to read each laboratory worksheet before going to the lab. The links in the syllabus are to the applicable laboratory manuals, and require the WebCT ID and password you selected when registering for WebCT.New students who have never registered for a WebCT course should see the WebCT Instructions for new students. Students who have previously registered for a WebCT course should see the WebCT Instructions for previously registered students. Substitute "222" wherever you see "XXX" in the instructions. You can purchase an access package at the book store if you do not already have an access code left from a previous registration.
Be sure to follow the instructions very carefully. In particular, note that on the first screen where you enter information, the "WebCT ID" it asks for is a user-id of your own choice, which you will use when loggin into the password-protected web site to download the lab manuals. It is not connected to the numbers given in your packet. You also choose the password you want on this screen. You will use that user-id and password to continue with the registration. Once you get the "Course Added" screen, you are not done! You need to click the "use it" link to go to the page to enter your access code from the WebCT packet. Once you have registered and you get access to the web site, you will never need to use the access code again, only the user-id and password you selected on the first screen.
Any requests to use previous lab credit for this course must be received via e-mail or in writing by Prof. Yost no later than Friday, June 7. The request must identify your previous lab TA. Students should attend any laboratories until approval is received, in case it is denied. Approval will depend on a high grade in the laboratory, verified with the previous TA. Scores below 85% generally will not be accepted. If you cannot identify your previous TA, or the TA cannot provide your score, the request will be denied. Students who are excused from the laboratory still must attend the recitations, and their current lab grade will depend in part on any quizzes administered.
