Scott A. Yost

Scott Yost I am a theoretical particle physicist, and am a a member of the Physics Department at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. My research is related to the LHC at CERN, the world's biggest physics experiment.

I worked at the University of Tennessee for 12 years, and my UT physics home page is archived here. I have a collection of Smoky Mountain Pictures which I put together, originally for the U.T. Canoe and Hiking Club, the largest sports club at UT Knoxville, for which I was faculty advisor in 2002 - 2003.

My Physics Page is my professional web site.

I have a Music Page with some music I made.

I have a YouTube Channel with some of my videos.

My hobbies include many outdoor activities, such as hiking and kayaking, as well as travelling to interesting parts of the world. See the some web sites I put together for some of my bigger 90's trips. A few big trips are not included: a private rafting trip through the Grand Canyon (1997), mountaineering in Alaska and California (1999), my second Nepal trip (2000), and a long trip in Mexico (2001) that included an attempt at mountain biking near Oaxaca, among others. I've also been to quite a few countries since then, mostly due to my work on international physics projects.

I like many kinds of music, especially the more experimental forms of jazz and modern classical music. My favorite composer is probably LaMonte Young, who I met briefly at a reception. I consider his The Well Tuned Piano to be the pinnacle of music to date. Based on carefully developed tunings and the harmonic series, it is a perfect blend of physics and musical aesthetics. I am also interested in other composers who are inspired by science or the physics of sound, including Alvin Lucier and Elliott Sharp. One of my favorite composers is John Cage, whose compositions play a role in modern music that might be compared role of quantum mechanics in modern physics. You can see a classic performance of his best-known composition here - with comments showing that it is still one of the most controversial musical works ever.

I was one of the founders of Virtual Interactive Center, a full-service Knoxville web technology agency, which is home to my web site. I served as VP of Operations from its incorporation until I left in 2005 to pursue other interests. Although I am no longer affiliated with VIC, it is a great company and I'm glad I played a part in getting it started. If you want the services of some real experts, talk to Steve and his team.
