His new book THE DREAMING UNIVERSE is about to appear in May, 1994. We are adapting his American Book Award TAKING THE QUANTUM LEAP (Harper- Collins) to interactive CDROM (using Microsoft Multimedia Viewer, Apple Multimedia Tool Book and Macromedia Action and Authorware with Auto Desk Studio 3D animations and original music by Beny Tchaicovksy. The Hoyle paper refutes the purely past-to-future efforts by Zurek, Gell-Mann, Hartle et-al to derive the actuality of the world in terms of classical Feynman histories emerging from a "decoherence functional". Is Sir Fred seeing false non-randomness in true randomness, or is he correct, and is it the skeptic who errs when he sees false randomness in true non-randomness? What is random in the past-to-future sense becomes non-random if one has the future-to-past cosmic code. Ladies and Gentlemen, what's the use of sitting alone in your box? Stop your nonsensical coherent wavering two and fro! Which eigenside are you on? Get ready, on your mark, Zeno's race is about to start! Before the firing of the faster-than-light bullets from the future, collapse your wavefunctions! You have no choice - or, do you? Fred Hoyle on quantum signals from the future. "THE UNIVERSE: PAST AND PRESENT REFLECTIONS" May, 1981, No. 70 Department Applied Math and Astronomy Univsity College Cardiff CF1 1XL, UK "... how is it possible to think outside one's knowledge? To think completely outside is of course impossible. Nevertheless, one can go beyond the detail of what's currently known, provided that one maintains the `style' of physics .... What Einstein did was to put an issue of style - all observers in uniform motion measure the same speed of light - ahead of the confusion of detail .... Of course, physicists never admit to `style', because the word brings a picture of Beau Brummel to mind. Instead they talk loftily about 'principles', a stuffed-duck posture. Style it is, and principle it is not. ... In 1938939 I had the good fortune to become a research student of Paul Dirac, who impressed on my young mind the pre-eminence of style over detail ... Everybody who becomes involved with quantum mechanics is likely to be uncomfortably aware that the dynamics of the theory leads to a spreading vagueness of the world. If you begin with a reasonably well-condensed particle wavefunction, a so-called wavepacket, the packet spreads with time, and pretty soon the thing is all over the Universe. Yet our observation of the world does not suggest such spreading vaguenss, Hence one infers that in some way there must be a compensating sharpening of the picture ... [follows a dramatic variant of Schrodinger's Cat involving a city hostage to an atomic bomb rather than a cyanide pellet] ...... the grand-ensemble wavefunction for the film is exactly like that of the city itself. The wavefunction is such that the chances of the grains of silver in the emulsion being arranged to form a mushroom cloud and of them being clear of such an arrangement remain even. There is no way in which the camera can have made a decision on the fate of the city. No proceed to develop the film ... hold the prints up to a light. And then at last you know what happened to the city. By `know' I mean you condense the wavefunction for the city ... you now set all the amplitudes of one category to zero, and the other category takes unit probability. All subsequent experience will be consistent with this drastic shift of the wavefunction. If you make a journey to the site of the city you will either find the people alive there, going about their business, or you will find a scne of woeful devastation. It will all fit exactly to what you decided in your first glance at he prints in the developing tray. ... The uncertainty was inherent, and yet it was somehow the observer who contrived to resolve the uncertainty. How was this done ...? .... just as in the classical case of Wheeler and Feynman, it was possible to have a time-symmetric ... quantum theory augumented by a cosmological response from the future that reproduced exactly all the practical results of normal quantum electrodynamics ... the cosmological response involved both the wavefunction and its complex conjugate, unlike normal quantum mechanics no pure-amplitude theory could be formulated ... the future imposes a condition on a local system because a signal goes out from the local system to other material systems in the future, which respond with a return signal on account of the time symmetry. One would like a situation in which the return signal imposed a deterministic reality on the local system, forcing an explicit solution to be made in all situations of an A or not-A kind as in the example ... mushroom cloud or no-mushroom cloud .. The trouble is that so long as one calculates the return signal from within quantum mechanics this does not happen, just as von Neumann claimed it could not happen ... The initial local system does not have deterministic reality because the systems in its future with which it interacts do not have deterministic reality ... and so on along an infinite chain ... Yet somewhere the Gordian Knot has to be cut ...since our everyday experience tells us that it is! The mathematical loophole lies at thel imit of the infinite chain of interactions... we cannot establish deterministic reality by starting within the chain and by attrempting to argue in a past-to-future direction towards the limit. But if we were to start with deterministic reality at the limit, arguing backwards from future to past, there would be deterministic reality at every link in the chain. In other worlds, the trouble may well come from arguing the problem back-to-front instead of front-to-back. .... it became apparent that an enormous intelligence must be abroad in the Universe ... is there a subtle further component arising from an external control of quantum uncertainty? ... ... think of every animal as a computer terminal equipped with a certain measure of backing storage... through the animal's genetic heritage and partly thorugh inputs from the five senses lll Each computer terminal receives vestigial signals arising from the phenomenon of condensation of the wavefunction ... The information content of these signals .. has to be interpreted against the available backing storaage ... Where the information falls at the limit, or outside, the backing storage we have a muddled illogical picture, as in religion .... Nevertheless, the peristent religious conviction that the pattern of our lives is stored in the future looks as if it could quite well be correct ... At the last trumpet! What an extraordinary way to describe the outcome of a sequence of arguments involving the condensation of the wavefunction .... Rather as the revelation occured to Paul on the road to Domascus mine occurred on the road over Bowes Moor ... when Narlikar and I were struggling with the problem of the quantum mechanical signal form the future ... Many will smile if I say that such an incident was triggered by the deciphering of a cosmic signal. It will be agreed that a sudden reordering of substantial blocks of information in the brain must have been involved but it will be said that the initiating signal happened by chance, from a random firing of neurons ... try choosing a base set with respect to which the interactions are good.... My own explanation ... was through controlling signals from the future ... it is probable that every so-called snap-decision we take depends on only a few quantum transitions in the brain ... There could be snap decisions affecting our behavior in moments of danger, the places we visit, the people we meet, and perhaps even the peopoe we marry. There is the possibility of waking each morning beside a different spouse, although our memory each morning wil always be consistent with the spuse-of-the-day ... Turning now to the single-picture theory, in which the wavefunction is condensed through the lopping of those brances of the quantum mechanical tree which lie outside our experience, .. it is precisely the lopping process that makes possible the phenomenon of consciousness ... that lies outside the capacity of the multiple-picture... The general tree is really a reference tree, a backcloth, that serves to define statistical relationships which must be preserved in the lopping process .... The single-picture theory frankly admits the need for defining a particular route through the reference tree ... the defining process to be through signals which propagate future-to-past, opposite to the branching of the tree itself, which goes past-to-future, ... In analogy to a two-stroke engine, quantum mechanics is just one of the cylinders, stroking from past-to-future. The other cylinder serves to condense the wavefunction, and it strikes from future-to-past. ... the cylinder which strokes from future-to-past is directed by a superintelligence, and that through the condensation of the wavefunction our thoughts are controlled." Sarfatti Comment: This seeming paranoia of Sir Fred on a cosmic scale is consistent with the hypothesis of Brian Josephson (Fdn Phys, 21, 197, 1991) that biological systems are able to circumvent the Born ||^2 probability density quantum randomness barrier to the local decoding of signals on the nonlocal quantum connection. It is also compatible with one of Nick Herbert's models of quantum consciousness in his new book ELEMENTAL MIND (Dutton, 1993). It is also compatible with my conjecture, extrapolated by David Albert's self-referential quantum automata (Phys. Lett, 98A, 249 24 Oct 1983), that alive quantum states that measure themselves overcome quantum randomness because they are able to have precise simultaneous knowledge of special pairs of non- commuting observables - one of which is self-referential or Godel "strangely looping" (e.g., Doug Hofstadter's GODEL, ESCHER, BACH). See eqs. (13) and (14) p.251 of the Albert paper. Nick Herbert's and Brian Josephson's ideas of controlled nonlocal hidden variables with local focussed statistical distributions obeying the global constraints of the Born probability of conventional measurement theory, are pre-figured by Hoyle's remark: ".. in our consciousness ... we find the ratios of the numbers of systems ... to be the usual statistical ratios of quantum mechanics. Subject to this restriction, suppose you were free to choose the numbers appearing in the sequence ... What could you achieve thereby. To understand the extraordinary power such a situation would give you, consider a quantum mechanical system with only two states... Then the sequence i.j contains only ones and zeros. Think of the ones as dots and the twos as dashes. Although you must maintain a specific ratio of dots- to-dashes, you will nevertheless have the freedom in a long sequence to convey a great deal of information in Morse code. ... if the condensation of the wavefunction is written structurally into our brains, information sequences can be implanted in our memory ... this is not vapouring, it is a consequence of the nature of quantum mechanics. It is a consequence of the cylinder working from past-to-future being insufficient to establish a completely deterministic theory. There would be no such possibility if the cylinder working from past-to-future were Newtonian ... ... the information sequences present in a finite material system may or may not be read and acted upon ... this is the difference between animate and inanimate systems ... A dog has trouble understanding a power-station, and man has trouble understanding religion. And so back to the concluding passages of the main essay ... Long before the 9th was written ... Beethoven's hearing has become negligible... Did Beethoven simply permute and combine memories for sound he had acquired in his youth? ...those memories represent a stage of development illustrated by the 1st and 2nd symphonies, a universe apart from the 9th ... it is hard to find anything in the past evolution of our species where the ability of a deaf man, beyond the prime of life, to rearrange patterns of sound from far-distant memories would have conferred a significant selective advantage. The alternate view is that the deaf Beethoven, decisively cut-off from the distractions of the world of men, equipped as a terminal with unusual backing storage, was able to receive a particular component of the cosmic signals, and with sharply increasing clarity as the years passed by. This view would be my choice, but each of us must listen and decide. Perhaps the decision turns on whether we ourselves hear the thunder of Zeus on Mt. Olympus." Fred Wolf, Nick Herbert, Saul Paul Sirag and Jack Sarfatti are collaborating to produce a New Physics CD called MIND, MATTER AND BEYOND. Using Sarfatti's 486 DX 50 (8meg ram, 720 meg hd , video capture, sound, CD etc in Microsoft Multimedia Viewer Authoring ... on Saul Paul's latest conceptual art .... Sirag writes: ".... What is the ultimate observer? Is it the apparatus on the physicist's laboratory table? Is it the physicist's eyes? His optic nerves? Hisbrain? His consciousness? .... According to ... John von Neumann and ... Eugene Wigner, the best solution to the measurement problem is that ultimately consciousness projects the the state vector onto the eigenvector. However, if one adopts the Wigner interpretation ... the nonlocality of the state vector as implied by Bell's theorem ... suggests that this consciousness that projects the state vector must be a universal consciousness." A word of caution. Most of today's physics community is hostile to the consciousness interpretation. A school of thought led by Murray Gell Mann dispenses with consciousness by showing how nonlocal correlations (of the observed/observer system to the "environment") superselects out a preferred set of joint observed/observer eigenvectors destroying the mutual phase coherence between copies of the observed/observer in different parallel worlds . In quantum cosmology, the environment is a set of certain degrees of freedom reaching across from Hawking's imaginary time pregeometry to the expanding real spacetime geometric curvature. On the other hand, Saul Paul would say that the "Mind of God" or his "universal consciousness" is in these very degrees of freedom. There is a fatal objection against the Gell-Mann attempt to exorcise the consciousness demon from the quantum measurement problem. The Gell-Mann (Zurek, Hartle et-al) strategy is incomplete. It throws the baby out with the bath water. While it does show how the density matrix for the joint observed/observer diagonalizes in a preferred eigenvector frame, so that no weird coherence effects across parallel classical histories exist, it fails to explain how a particular classical history actualizes out of the set of possible classical histories. One other point. From David Albert we learn how quantum mechanics transcends itself when there is Godel self- reference. The quantum observer observing himself is in a virtual state inside the Heisenberg uncertainty limit. This self-aware virtual observer can have precise simultaneous knowledge of noncommuting observables that an outside real observer cannot. But this is also how free will or intent is possible - because the inward looking observer can choose which eigenvector to project itself into. Initiation into The Final Secret of The Illuminati (music background from Mozart's The Magic Flute) Note, Nick Herbert in Elemental Mind can be compared to Mozart, Saul Paul to Beethoven in his late string quartet period, Fred Wolf to Tchiakovksy and myself? ... Richard Wagner writing Parsifal I suppose! "Since the eigenvalues associated with the measurement of" (the internal charge properties) "of particles reside in reflection space, it is reasonable to expect that it will be intimately related to the fundamental fact of quantum mechanics: only eigenvalues are observable. Furthermore, because there seems to be no fundamental distinction between observation and what is observed, I propose that the reflection space (i.e., eigenvalue space) is universal consciousness." Saul Paul is intuitive here. First consider human consciousness which seems tied to the wetware of our brain. It is a dynamic biological function evolving in time. Time has no role in reflection space which is beyond time. It is important that the infinite structures of reflection space are inherent in SU(2) which does include spacetime. Saul Paul appears to be talking of a universal God Mind that is beyond time - a Platonic archetype that projects into spacetime in the sense of a fiber bundle. This is definitely quantum qabala. For the moment, experience this as a kind of rhapsodic poetry or conceptual art using advanced mathematical physics as the tool. ' ... all of the magical structure of unified field theory is in the reflection space... the Mc Kay-group algebra corresponds to the physical aspect of the world, while the Lie algebra corresponds to the mental aspect." Saul Paul has empirical evidence for the identification of Lie algebra with mentality in the work of Piaget with children that fits the Klein group subgroup of S4. A Mythematical Journey "The reflection space exists in the intersection of the Mc Kay-group algebra and the ... infinite-dimensional Lie algebra defined by the extended Coxeter graph ... Since this intersection space mediates between the two algebras ... I propose to identify it with universal consciousness... we are proposing that the world is a single space consisting of two different but intersecting algebras ... the scheme is monistic geometrically, but dualistic algebraically ... there is no problem here with the notion of the mental realm acting on the physical ... the action of each ,,, upon the other is mediated by the overlapping ... reflection space." Saul Paul proceeds with an E7 model of the Platonic Mind of God. Remember that Hawking in A Brief History of Time wonders about the Mind of God. The final words of Hawking's book are: "... why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for then we would know the mind of God." Saul Paul starts where Hawking finishes. E8xE8 is the group of superstring theory. In Saul Paul's view Mind enters when the superstring symmetry breaks down to E7. On the physical side: "...the maximal compact subspace of the E7 Mc Kay group algebra ... C[OD] ... is the 48-d unitary Lie group ... P = U(1)xU(2)xU(3)xU(4)xU(2)xU(3)xU(2)xU(1) P ... `principle fiber bundle' A `fiber bundle' is a total space B which projects down to a subspace X (called the base space) in such a way that all the points of B which project to a point of X constitute a fiber F; moreover, there is a Lie group which acts on each fiber as a symmetry group. In the case of the principle fiber bundle, the fibers are all copies of the symmetry group, so that the action of the symmetry group on a fiber is the action of the Lie group on itself." Therefore, the principle fiber bundle has the Godel strange loop of self-reference built in automatically. It must be equivalent to David Albert's observer with a photograph of itself in the parallel universe next door existing in the virtual reality inside the quantum barrier of Heisenberg uncertainty for real world processes. "... each point of X (base space) can be considered to be a copy of the Lie group.." Therefore, each apparently local space-time event in Einstein's relativity actually has a rich nonlocal inner structure in the `implicate order'.
