The death of famed explorer Meriwether
Lewis in 1809 near Hohenwald is considered one of Tennessee's
greatest mysteries. His body was discovered with multiple wounds,
but experts have never determined whether it was murder or suicide.

Captain William Clark
York, a slave of Captain William Clark, became an invaluable member
of the Lewis & Clark expedition. Because the Western Indians
had never seen a black man, his presence became a useful tool in
negotiations with the tribes. His skill as a diplomat served Clark
on numerous occasions. Clark freed York following the expedition.
York later died in a Cholera epidemic in Middle Tennessee.
While Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg is the most remembered, historians
regard General John Hood's charge at the Battle of Franklin as
one of the greatest military assaults in history. Over 54 Confederate
Regimental Commanders were either killed or wounded in the assault.
