Announcement: The answers to Exam 3 are available in PDF format. Course grades are now final, and will be turned into the registrar this week.

The currently posted grades include the last extra credit assignment, and the best estimate available so far for your lab grade. The final lab grades are not in yet.

Students may evaluate this course online by going to the SAIS Web Site and clicking on the link for Summer 2003 Semester Online Evaluations. The system will be available until midnight, August 7. This will be your only chance to evaluate the course, so don't miss this opportunity. There will be no paper evaluations.

If you enjoyed learning about physics, you should find the last few chapters which we did not have time to cover are interesting as well. I am moving to Baylor University before the fall semester, so if you need to contact me, you will find me in the physics department there.

Course Syllabus Laboratory Syllabus Online Homework Grades

The lectures are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:40 AM to 11:55 AM Ayers Hall, room 102. Labs are held on Tuesday and Thursday in room 510 (or 508) of the Nielsen Physics Building, 3:30 - 5:45 for section 30113 and 1:00 - 3:15 for section 30126. Laboratory attendance is mandatory, and all labs must be completed or made up for a passing grade. The minimum passing lab grade is 70%, and you must pass the laboratory to pass the course. Recitations are held in room 405 of the Geological Sciences Building an hour before the labs, by the lab TAs. Note that some days, the laboratory will not be held, but the recitation will always be held.

See the course syllabus for the schedule. Problem assignments will be given on-line. Please try to read the assigned chapters before coming to class, to obtain the maximum benefit from the lectures. Physics is a hands-on subject. The only way to understand the course material is to work through it on your own. Watching someone else work the problems will not alone make you learn it. To get the most out of the course, you should begin to work on the problems as soon as they are assigned. You should also try to answer as many of the Questions at the end of each chapter as you can.

Laboratories are held according to the schedule in the laboratory syllabus. Attendance is required, and all labs must be completed or made up for a grade. See the lab syllabus for details.

Recitations meet twice a week, and are led by the laboratory instructor. Attendance is required, and quizzes may be scheduled by the instructor. The grade on any quizzes is included in the laboratory grade. The recitations will give you a chance to ask questions on the material in a smaller setting. You should go to them prepared to discuss the problems. It is important to keep up with the lectures, and not get behind on the homework assignments.

Office hours are an hour after each lecture, or by special arrangement. Please make an appointment if you cannot come after class. You can use the e-mail address or phone number at the top of this page if you have any questions or desire a meeting.

The final grade is determined by three exams, the online homework, and the laboratory grade. The weight of each item in the final grade is as follows:

Each Exam18%
Laboratory26%
Online Homework20%
The exam schedule and material covered on each is shown on the syllabus. To receive a passing grade in the course, you must receive a passing grade in the laboratory, with all of the work completed or made up.
