Scott A. Yost

I am a theoretical particle physicist, and have a professional home page on my physics activities. I am presently a Visiting Associate Professor at Princeton University, where I am teaching physics and doing research relating to the LHC at CERN. The LHC is about to become the world's biggest physics experiment.

The place I've spent the most time (12 years) was the University of Tennessee, and my UT physics home page is archived here. East Tennessee is the most beautiful place I've lived. I have a collection of Smoky Mountain Pictures which I put together, originally for the U.T. Canoe and Hiking Club, the largest sports club at UT Knoxville, for which I was faculty advisor.

My hobbies include many outdoor activities, such as hiking and kayaking, as well as travelling to interesting parts of the world. See below for some web sites I put together for some of my bigger 90's trips. A few big trips are not included: a private rafting trip in the Grand Canyon (1997), mountaineering in Alaska and California (1999), my second Nepal trip (2000), and a long trip in Mexico (2001) that included an attempt at mountain biking in the mountains around Oaxaca, among others.

I also like many kinds of music, especially the more experimental forms of jazz and modern classical music. I have been experimenting with making music on the computer, and other ways. Some examples of my music are on this site. I've been hearing a lot of good music in New York recently. The Stone has become a favorite place to see new music. I also saw a memorable CD-release concert by Michael Harrison, a student of my favorite composer, LaMonte Young, who I met briefly at the reception after the concert. I consider LaMonte Young's The Well Tuned Piano to be the pinnacle of music to date. Based on carefully developed tunings and the harmonic series, it is a perfect blend of physics and musical aesthetics. I am also strongly attracted to the works of John Cage, whose role in the development of modern music may be comparable to the role of Einstein in the development of modern physics.

I was also one of the founders of Virtual Interactive Center, a full-service Knoxville Internet solutions company, which is home to my web site. I am no longer affiliated with VIC, but it is a great company and I'm glad I played a part in getting it started.

The following are some web sites I made for some of my travels.
