[*] Indexing User Directories

Personal home pages are included in the VIC index only if requested. There is no fee for this. Just contact our web administrator at www@vic.com The VIC index is updated weekly.

Users may make their own indexes using the utility /usr/local/bin/www-index, which implements the SWISH index in an easy-to use manner. Running this routine creates an index file index.swish in your pub-http directory.

We provide a simple form interface to make indexing even easier, especially for PPP users.

Users may later customize their index configuration by editing the file .swishrc in created by www-index in your home directory. This file plays a similar role to the system-wide swish.conf file described in the SWISH documentation, and the format is identical.

An index created in this manner is personal, and is not merged with the general VIC index unless requested as described above. You may refer to your personal index in your web pages using the URL

         http://www.vic.com/cgi-bin/swish/~USER/
where USER is your user-id. Businesses should omit the ~ symbol.

"Experts" may wish to run SWISH directly without the wrapper. This may be done by running /www/support/swish according to the documentation. Place the index.swish file in the directory you wish to index, and include the virtual pathname to this directory in the URL referencing the index.
