After arriving in Christchurch, my first stop was Mt. Cook National
Park, home of New Zealand's largest mountain. The drive there was itself
quite beautiful, following the shores of Lake Tekapo on the approach to the
park.
The high glaciated mountains here are a mecca for climbers, but there is also a nice selection of day hikes and overnight trips accessible to walkers. The overnight walk to Mueller Hut was one of the most memorable walks of my entire stay in New Zealand. I was blessed by perfect weather for most of the walk, and the views from the high ridge across the valley from Mt. Cook were stunning.
The walk is short, but not easy. The steep route climbs rapidly from the valley floor, past a couple of tarns, and then up to the top of the ridge. The last part of the climb crossed a large snow field when I was there in early summer, and one person attempting the climb at the same time turned back because he felt unsafe.
Mueller hut is situated at the very top of the ridge, and has an excellent view of Mt. Cook and the entire surrounding area on a clear day. There was still plenty of snow up on the ridge when I was there, and some took advantage of this to try sledding on large plastic bags. The climb up the ridge is also popular. The first peak climbed by Hillary is said to be here.
Taking only four hours to go up, and considerably less time to get back down, the Mueller Hut walk can easily be done by a fit day-hiker. However, staying overnight can be worth it if you catch an impressive sunset or sunrise. I was lucky to see both.
