Avalanche Peak

Arthur's Pass National Park

[Avalanche Peak View] Arthur's Pass may be known to most as the high point on the Trans-Alpine Express railway from Christchurch to Greymouth. For those staying longer, there are plenty of choices of fine walks. I was staying just one night, spending New Year's Eve in the tiny town of Arthur's Pass.

The weather was perfect, and I had time for one day-hike. I chose the one that looked most interesting, and also most difficult: a climb to the summit of Avalanche Peak. The walk can be done as a loop, going up one trail and down another, so there is no need to retrace one's steps. Either way, the trail is extremely steep. There were lots of warnings at the visitor's center saying that the climb can be deadly in bad weather. Many attempting it gave up well below the top. It is also no place for someone with a fear of heights. In many ways, it was reminiscent of the Cascade Saddle route, climbing steep, exposed tussock ridges.

At the very summit was an very narrow ridge, with steep drops on either side. One lady froze here and would go no further. But the views in all directions were definitely worth the climb, especially on a clear day. This was unquestionably the best day-hike I did in New Zealand.
