Viewing the Pictures

Each album page contains a small number of thumbnail images linked to larger versions. The number of colors in the thumbnails is reduced for fast transfer. The number of colors actually seen may be further reduced depending on the capabilities of your browser.

The large images are mostly JPEGs. The pictures will appear as intended only if all colors are seen. If you are using Netscape, the image quality may be somewhat degraded by its limited color map. Possible viewer problems include discrete color bands or dithering. Mosaic is better if you use an external viewer capable of displaying all the colors. Your version of Netscape may also permit an external viewer be chosen. If so, it is probably best to use it.

If you are using X windows, xv with the "perfect colors" (-perfect) option is an ideal viewer. This can be specified by placing a line

	image/*; xv -perfect -8 %s
in your .mailcap file. A side effect is that the colors in your other windows will be affected as long as you view the picture. Alternatively, you can use xv as usual, but select "perfect colors" from the Display menu on the control panel. The -8 command-line option is recommended in any case to automatically convert to 8-bit mode if the JPEGs do not display properly.

A good viewer for Windows is Lview Pro, which may be used with Mosaic. I have not personally tried any viewers for Macintosh.
