This is the upper Tama Lake in an old volcanic crater below Mt. Ngauruhoe. These lakes are a nice side-hike from the Tongariro Circuit, and can be reached by a day hike from park headquarters at Whakapapa Village on the lower slopes of Mt. Ruapehu (which erupted in September before my visit, spewing car-sized boulders). (Jan. 11, 1996)
