Ngauruhoe Crater

Ngauruhoe Crater is at the top of Mt. Ngauruhoe, a steep climb above the Tongariro Crossing portion of the Tongariro Circuit, which makes a big loop around this conical volcano. The crater still emits volcanic gasses, so climbing into it is not recommended, although some people do. The gas vents are quite warm to the touch. (Jan. 9, 1996)
