In December, 1995, I went to New Zealand for six weeks. New Zealand has a great variety of landscapes. It also has interesting forests with huge fern trees and lots of moss that look like something from the dinosaur days, and many strange birds, which have survived because there were no land mammals (except bats) before people came.

New Zealand has a reputation for being a great place for walks. I did a lot of tramping. This is what hiking is called there, and it is a very popular activity. Adventuring is also a lot of fun, with a wide variety of activities available for the traveler looking for some excitement.

I rented a car while on the South Island. New Zealand has an excellent public transportation system, but I found the car gave me a lot more flexibility, especially to explore the wet west coast. After dropping off the car, I stopped at Kaikoura, noted for its marine life, for whale watching and dolphin swimming. I finished my visit in Rotorua, the tourist capital of the North Island, where I explored the thermal areas, learned about Maori culture, and went rafting.
