[luklaplane]
Lukla Airstrip
I arrived at Lukla on this plane. To land, the plane flies directly toward the side of the valley, and lands uphill on the short, steep unpaved runway. (10/29/94)

[mani]
Mani stones and prayer flags
These mani stones and prayer flags were encountered between Lukla and Phakding. The writing is in Tibetan characters. Mani stones should be passed to the left, in a clockwise direction. (10/29/94)

[namche]
Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Everest Region for most trekkers, is the major regional trading center, and contains the headquarters of the Sagarmatha National Park. (10/31/94)

[tengboche]
Tengboche Monastery
Tengboche Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region. It was recently rebuilt at great expense after being destroyed by a fire. The tip of Mount Everest is visible to the left, and Ama Dablam stands to the right. (11/2/94)

[buddhist]
Buddhist ceremony
This is a memorial service for a deceased monk in the Tengboche monastery. (11/2/94)
