This dance is named for the jumpy character of the dance, form the Greek word pedo which means to leap, hop or jump. It is also known by several other names which refer to the area where it is popular, for example Maleviziotikos.
The pidiktos is unique in that it is not always danced in a circle which moves to the right. Some versions are danced with movement diagonally to the right and then straight back, while others perform it almost in place with very little movement to the right.
This dance gives the leader a chance to show off his ability and
agility, restrained only by the handerkerchief which connects him to the
second dancer. Also, it is common for other dancers to be allowed a
chance to improvise in the center of the circle.
