This is an archived web site I designed in 1997 for Hot Ice Ltd, a Uganda safari operator. Subsequent years brought trouble for the Ugandan travel industry, and this site was discontinued. Things have improved since then. You can look them up for current contact information.
Day Six
Day Six will probably begin very early if you have decided to make it all the way to the park headquarters and complete your trek. An alternative would be to stay another night at Nyabitaba Hut.
In any event the path from Guy Yeoman is quite dangerous in spots. This section includes the steepest part of the entire circuit, and in places is nearly vertical, with long dropoffs. The trail follows a trickling stream down a slick rocky slope in places. Helping each other and descending very slowly facing the slope instead of facing outward are recommended, especially as you approach Kichuchu down a dry and dusty crevice.
From Kichuchu the trail parallels and twice crosses the Mubuku River mostly in deep mud until the last few kilometres of good dry trail follow the ridge down to Nyabitaba, which completes the circuit. Typical hikers make Guy Yeoman to Nyabitaba in 5 hours.
Should you decide to continue to park headquaters it is another two or three hours depending on the condition of your knees and your desire to reach a comfortable bed and bath! Be especially careful of the vines and brush which can trip you up, and resist the urge to hurry out of the mountains. Late evening walking can be great for watching birds or the occasional Blue Monkey. Sharp eyes may catch a glimpse of the brilliant green but changeable chameleon.
Instead of rushing off to Kasese you might quietly end your remarkable visit with a bath and bed in the clean comfort able rooms offered by RMS, and visit the simple restaurant developed by a local ladies' group for a beer and luxurious candlelight meal.
