Lake Manyara, and much of the land covered by our safari, is Masai country. The Masai were the only people I encountered in Africa who still dressed in a non-Western manner. In Uganda, it was not unusual to find men wearing suits even in the smallest villages (though not necessarily with shoes). The Masai know their dress makes them attractive to photographers, and they expect to be paid.
