Herds on the Serengeti
I visited Tanzania at the end of a long dry season. The big herds had migrated to the far south end of the park, and we drove down to see them. There were incredible numbers of wildebeast (gnus) and zebras, mingling with elephants and other animals. (3/4/97)

River Crossing on the Serengeti
A long stream of wildebeast and zebras came from the distance, crossing this river in the southern reaches of the Serengeti. (3/4/97)

Wildebeast Migrating
Wildebeast migrate in long, single-file lines. We found most of them in the southern part of the Serengeti, at the end of an unusually long winter dry season. (3/4/97)

[ngorogoro]
Ngorogoro Crater
The view of Ngorogoro Crater from the rim does not suggest the incredible number of animals below. Even with binoculars, I could pick out only a few elephants from this distance. (3/3/97)

[zebras]
Zebras in Ngorogoro Crater
Zebras seemed to be the most numerous animals in the crater, but that may be because they are the most noticable. There were also plenty of wildebeast, gazelles, and buffalo. We also saw elephants, lions and rhinos. (3/5/97)
