Masai on the Plains
The Masai are cattle herders. Their bright red robes makes them easy to spot even very far away. They carry spears and arrows for protection against wild animals. (3/3/97)

Breakdown on the Serengeti
Safari drivers must know how to fix their vehicles. The rough, dusty roads are hard on land rovers. Here, our driver is fixing the carburator on the Serengeti. This was just the first of a number of problems we had with the vehicle on the safari. The driver said the company, A.J. Safaris, was going to get some new vehicles soon, but it was too late for us. [lions1]
Lions on the Serengeti
We saw plenty of lions on the Serengeti. They sleep during the day, and you can drive right up to them. (3/3/97)

[gazelle]
Thomson Gazelle
There are many species of antelope on the Serengeti. The Thomson gazelle is probably the most recognizable, because of its wide black stripe. (3/3/97)

Camping on the Serengeti
We pitched our tents close together to camp on the Serengeti. You never know what will visit at night. I was awakened by noises outside our tent. I had no idea what was out there, and didn't want to open the tent to look. It started pushing against my back. Then I heard someone in the next tent say an elephant was out there. I hoped it would watch its step! When I looked out, the elephant was in the forest, but the camp was full of giant porcupines. (3/3/97)
