- Baboons at Lake Manyara
- We encountered this large group of baboons at Lake Manyara. Someone always has to watch for baboons in camp, since they can cause a lot of trouble.

- Hippos at Lake Manyara
- Tanzania was extremely dry during my visit, but we did find one pool of hippos. There were not nearly as many here as in Uganda, where I saw more water.

- Masai Man
- Lake Manyara, and much of the land covered by our safari, is Masai country. The Masai were the only people I encountered in Africa who still dressed in a non-Western manner. In Uganda, it was not unusual to find men wearing suits even in the smallest villages (though not necessarily with shoes). The Masai know their dress makes them attractive to photographers, and they expect to be paid.
