[glacier3]
Northern Glaciers, Kibo
This is a view of the glaciers on the northern rim of Kibo, seen from Stella Point. There was a lot of ice around the rim, but none on the trail itself. The ice fields beside Uhuru Peak were particularly extensive. (2/28/97)

[kibo5]
Kibo from the Saddle
We descended via the Marangu, a.k.a. "Coca-Cola" Route, which most tourists take to the summit, passing far more climbers than I had seen on the Machame Route. The Marangu Route has huts and stores, but is less scenic. This is the view of Kibo from the saddle between it and Mawenzi, which people climbing the Marangu Route would see on their way to Kibo Hut, their last stop before the climb. Kibo views are limited on the Marangu Route before reaching the saddle. (2/28/97)

[horombo]
Horombo Hut
On the way down, we camped just one night, at Horombo Hut, which had a large group of A-frame cabins and a pricy snack shop. There are some nice views of the valley below from this point, and the tip of Kibo can be seen, as well as Mawenzi. This view is in the direction opposite Kibo. (2/28/97)

[burned]
Burned Landscape with Peaks
Fires are common on Kilimanjaro, where lightning strikes frequently. Large areas between Horombo Hut and Mandara Hut had burned recently, and some spots were still smoldering. The effect was oddly beautiful, with the blackened trees contrasting with the bright green grass. Both Kibo and Mawenzi can be seen in the distance. (3/1/97)

[group]
Kilimanjaro Group Picture
This is a picture of me together with my staff, just after giving them their tips. My guide, Thobias, is to my left. The porter to his left was with me for just the last day, having brought up some fresh food for the last day Horombo Camp. The guides and porters at Kilimanjaro are quite fussy about tips, and will let you know if they are not happy. (3/1/97)
