[sunset]
Sunset at Camp Barafu
By the time the sun set, most people in the camp were already in bed, expecting to get up again at 11 PM. I would be sleeping an hour later, because my guide figured I was fast. The sunset was worth staying up for. (2/27/97)

[glacier1]
Moonlit Glacier, Kibo
We had a beautiful moonlit night for our climb, which we began at 1 AM. Both my guide and I brought Petzl headlamps, but didn't need them. The sky was clear above, and the lights of Moshi could be seen below. The climb was much easier than I expected, and I passed the others on the way up, arriving at the rim around 4:30 AM, even after some long cigarette breaks (for my guide). The bright moonlight on the glaciers near Stella Point created a beautiful scene few climbers got to see. (2/28/97)

[uhuru]
The Summit: Uhuru Peak
I was hoping to get to the summit, Uhuru Peak at 19340 feet, sometime close to sunrise, but we had seriously overestimated how long it would take, and at 5 degrees F, it was too cold to sit around long. We delayed long enough at my guide's last cigarette break that we weren't first to the top, but we still got there shortly after 5 AM, an hour and a half before sunrise. This was my last picture with my small camera before it froze. Fortunately the other survived. (2/28/97)

[mawenzirise]
Sunrise over Mawenzi
After my predawn summit, I meandered back down toward Stella Point, waiting in the 5 degree F cold to catch the sunrise. It was worth waiting for when the sun rose from the sea of clouds beyond Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro's secondary peak. (2/28/97)

[rim]
Near Stella Point, Kibo
I am standing near Stella Point on the rim of Kibo's crater, bathed in the golden light of the sunrise. Several more people had made it to the rim by now. Uhuru Peak, the summit, is the highest point along the rim behind me. (2/28/97)
