- Kibo from above Camp Shira
- We had an unusually clear morning for the walk to Camp Barranco. We followed the trail around the south side of Kibo, which provided excellent views not seen on the more popular Marangu route.

- Camp Barranco
- Camp Barranco is just below Barranco Wall, which we would have to climb the next day. That would be the steepest part of the entire climb. This is a view down the stream toward the valley far below, through the giant groundsel trees common in the area.

- Breach Wall from Camp Barranco
- After sunset, Kibo became visible from Camp Barranco, where we had a good view of the Breach Wall and glaciers.

- Camp Barafu
- Camp Barafu is the last camp before the summit. It is perched atop a narrow ridge with views of both Kibo and Mawenzi, once the weather cleared. Many climbers had trouble acclimatizing to the altitude, and didn't make it beyond this point. We would not be spending the night here, but would leave for the summit at 1 AM.

- Kibo from Camp Barafu
- This is my last view of Kibo climbing it. My guide Thobias figured it would take 5 hours to reach Stella Point (the crater rim) from here, and we wanted to arrive in time for sunrise.
