Kilimanjaro, Distant Sunrise View
Kilimanjaro was rarely visible from the distance during my visit, because it is normally shrouded in clouds during the day. The clearest I saw it was at sunrise, from the bus I took from Moshi to Dar es Salaam after my safari following the climb.

Porter en Route to Camp Machame
The porters at Kilimanjaro normally carry loads on their heads in baskets or bags. This is a popular way of carrying things in Africa, and I was always seeing women with things on their heads. It is supposed to be a very efficient way of carrying a load, but requires a lot of practice. (2/24/97)

Camp Shira
Kibo Peak is seen behind our camp near the Shira Plateau. We normally camped near either a small hut or a cave, since the staff needed shelter. Here they stayed in a cave and set up my tent nearby. (2/25/97)

Kibo from Camp Shira
Kibo was normally not visible most of the day, but came out of the clouds at sunset. It was most beautiful in the orange glow of the setting sun. (2/25/97)

Shira Plateau
Shira Plateau is the wide remnant of one of Kilimanjaro's three cones. The others, Kibo and Mawenzi, remain as peaks. We camped near the close edge of it. Shira Cathedral is a formation on its rim. Mt. Meru is seen in the distance in the left of this picture. (2/26/97)
