Amsterdam Red Light District
Yes, Amsterdam is not in Africa, but my plane stopped there on the way, and I had a day to wander around. This is the first city I've seen where the red light district is a tourist attraction. It is like wandering through a woman zoo, with scantily clad ladies displaying themselves behind glass doors below red flourescent lights. (2/5/97)

Stone Town from Pyramid Inn Roof
I decided to visit Zanzibar while on the safari, and was happy I did. It is a fascinating place. Here is a view of the old Stone Town from the roof of Pyramid Inn, where I stayed following the recommendation of one of the people on the safari. (3/8/97)

A Street in Stone Town
Stone Town in Zanzibar is a wonderful maze of narrow streets. It took me quite a while to be able to quickly find my way back to my hotel, Pyramid Inn, in the heart of it. There have been some incidents of muggings lately, but mostly it is reasonably safe to wander around, at least during the day. (3/9/97)

Spice Tour: Solomon and a Jackfruit
Zanzibar grows a wide variety of spices and fruit, and supplies around 90% of the world's cloves. Spice tours are popular. I took Solomon's spice tour. Here he is showing us a jackfruit, which we could also sample later. "Follow Solomon to see other things", he would say at each stop. (3/8/97)
